Named for King Louis IX of France, St. Louis is the largest city in Missouri. The first World's Fair and Olympic Games held in the US were hosted by St. Louis in 1904. Today the city is home to Anheuser Busch, Boeing, Purina, and Wachovia Securities, among others.
Nicknamed “Gateway City” and “Gateway to the West,” St. Louis was the first leg of the Oregon Trail for pioneers heading west. The impressive Gateway Arch, rising 630 feet high from a 60-foot foundation, is part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Park and features the Tucker Theatre, the Museum of Westward Expansion, and Levee Mercantile general store. Other Downtown attractions include Busch Stadium, Anheuser-Busch Brewery, and Union Station.
St. Louis is home to more than a dozen sports venues. The Cardinals play baseball at Busch Stadium while the Rams play football in the Edward Jones Dome. Hockey fans can cheer on the Blues at Scottrade Center.
Visitors with cultural interests enjoy concerts at Metro Station, the St. Louis Shakespeare Company, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, parades, festivals, and museums.
